These three diseases represent three types of spread. In miliary tuberculosis, the arterial blood stream distributes multiple foci at random. In erysipelas, organisms invade a plexus of lymph vessels and multiply. As a result the primary lesion enlarges, colony-like, from its margins. In tuberculous adenitis, the organisms spread in lymph vessels to multiply in the regional lymph nodes and lymph node chains. Modifications of the typical patterns are common.
