Top quark search through B meson reconstruction

A novel physics analysis technique is developed to extend the search for the top quark in proton-antiproton collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron. The method identifies the top quark via its decay into a weak boson (W {yields} l {nu}) and a bottom quark. The bottom quark is partially reconstructed by using the decay mode: B {yields} D{sup *} X, D{sup *} {yields} D {pi}. In contrast to all previous top searches, this approach clearly reconstructs the top quark mass peak, and provides excellent suppresssion of conventional back grounds. Recent studies of the decay mode B {yields} D{sup *} l v will be discussed in detail.
