PAMELA Overview : Design Goals and Principles

The PAMELA (Particle Accelerator for MEdicaL
\nApplications) project is to design an
\naccelerator for proton and light ion therapy
\nusing non-scaling Fixed Field Alternating
\nGradient (FFAG) accelerators, as part of the
\nCONFORM project, which is also constructing
\nthe EMMA electron model of a non-scaling
\nFFAG at Daresbury. This paper presents
\nan overview of the PAMELA design, and a
\ndiscussion of the design goals and the principles
\nused to arrive at a preliminary specification
\nof the accelerator.
