As part of the gradual re-structuring of the Updates, this review is a result of combining those on Minerals and Refractories and on Chemicals, Iron, Steel and Non-ferrous Metals, previously published in JAAS 1987, Volume 2, Issues 8 and 5, respectively. They are based on abstracts received in the review year up to the end of April 1988.
