The Heterobranchia -a new concept of the phylogeny of the higher Gastropoda

Abstract In an attempt to reconstruct the phylogeny of the higher gastropods, the essential characters are first critically examined to determine occurrence and systematic value. From here the evolutionary pathway is cladistically analysed from a common prosobranch ancestor up to the basal pulmonates. A new classification according to (but not identical with) the reconstructed cladogram is presented. The “Opisthobranchia” are shown to be a stage group and are thus divided in: Architectibranchia (Acteonoidea, Ringiculoidea, Diaphanoidea), Eleutherobranchia (Notaspidea, Nudibranchia, Anthobranchia, Smeagolida), and Tectibranchia (Bullomorpha, Acochlidiomorpha, Aplysiomorpha, Saccoglossa, Thecasomata, Gymnosomata). Together with the Gymnomorpha (Onchidiida, Soleolifera, Rhodopida) and the Pulmonata they are united in the Pentaganglionata (nov. = Euthyneura), which are mainly characterized by the presence of two additional (= parietal) ganglia; in contrast, euthyneury is a phenomenon of convergence. Because of several primitive characters (streptoneury, pallial gonoduct) the Architectibranchia are regarded as most primitive Pentaganglionata. The Allogastropoda (Architectonicoidea, Pyramidelloidea, Nerineoidea), characterized by a special secondary gill, are (as Triganglionata) a sistergroup of the Pentaganglionata. Both are united in the Heterobranchia, which are mainly characterized by a hyperstrophic protoconch, spiral sperm and special egg-connections (chalazae). The taxon “Heterogastropoda”, used very differently in the past, is shown to be diphyletic and is divided into Heteroglossa (suborder of Caenogastropoda, including Cerithiopsoidea, Triphoroidea, Epitonioidea, Eulimoidea) and Allogastropoda. The Rissoelloidea (Rissoellidae, Omalogyridae) are a connecting link between marine taenioglossan prosobranchs and the heterobranchs. With the latter they share the loss of the ctenidium and its substitution by two ciliary tracts (water currents) and a pallial kidney (respiration). Zusammenfassung Die Heterobranchia — ein neues Konzept zur Phylogenie der höheren Gastropoden Mit dem Ziel, die Phylogenie höherer Gastropoden zu rekonstruieren, werden zunächst alle wesentlichen Merkmale einer kritischen Analyse unterzogen, urn Verteilung and systematische Signifikanz festzustellen. Davon ausgehend wird die Evolution von prosobranchen Vorfahren bis zu den basalen Pulmonaten cladistisch analysiert. Auf der Basis dieses Kladogramms wird eine (nicht identische) neue Klassifikation der hoheren Gastropoda präsentiert. Die “Opisthobranchia” erweisen sich als Stadiengruppe and werden aufgeteilt in: Architectibranchia (Acteonoidea, Ringiculoidea, Diaphanoidea), Eleutherobranchia (Notaspidea, Nudibranchia, Anthobranchia, Smeagolida) and Tectibranchia (Bullomorpha, Acochlidiomorpha, Aplysiomorpha, Saccoglossa, Thecasomata, Gymnosomata). Gemeinsam mit Gymnomorpha (Onchidiida, Soleolifera, Rhodopida) and den Pulmonata bilden sie die Pentaganglionata (nov. = Euthyneura), die vor allem durch die Existenz zweier zusatzlicher (= Parietal) Ganglien gekennzeichnet sind, wahrend die Euthyneurie ein Konvergenzphanomen darstellt. Auf Grand des noch erhaltenen pallialen Gonoduktes sowie noch vorhandener Streptoneurie werden die Architectibranchia als urspriinglichste Pentaganglionata angesehen. Die Allogastropoda (Architectonicoidea, Pyramidelloidea, Nerineoidea), gekennzeichnet durch eine spezielle Sekandarkieme, stellen (als Triganglionata) eine Schwestergruppe der Pentaganglionata dar. Beide zusammen bilden die Heterobranchia, die vor allem durch einen hyperstrophen Protoconch, Spiralspermien and spezielle Eischniire (Chalazae) charakterisiert sind. Das Behr unterschiedlich gebrauchte Taxon “Heterogastropoda” erweist sich als diphyletisch and wird in Heteroglossa (Unterordnung der Caenogastropoda, mit Cerithiopsoidea, Triphoroidea, Epitonioidea, Eulimoidea) and Allogastropoda (s. o.) aufgeteilt. Die Rissoelloidea (Rissoellidae, Omalogyridae) sind ein Bindeglied zwischen marinen, taenioglossen Prosobranchiern and den Heterobranchiem. Mit den letzteren teilen sie den Verlust des Ctenidiums sowie dessen Ersatz durch zwei Cilienstreifen (Wasserstromung) and eine pallial gelegene Niere (Atmung).
