Spin-Lattice Relaxation and Chemical Shift of<mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:msup><mml:mrow><mml:mi mathvariant="normal">Kr</mml:mi></mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mn>83</mml:mn></mml:mrow></mml:msup></mml:mrow></mml:math>in Solid and Liquid Krypton

Pulsed nuclear-magnetic-resonance measurements have been performed on ${\mathrm{Kr}}^{83}$ in solid and liquid krypton between 40 K and the critical point. Results are reported for spin-lattice relaxation times (${T}_{1}$) and chemical shifts in a 51 600-G field. The ${\mathrm{Kr}}^{83}$ ${T}_{1}$ data are compared with theory and with corresponding results for ${\mathrm{Ne}}^{21}$ in neon and ${\mathrm{Xe}}^{131}$ in xenon. It is concluded that the ${\mathrm{Kr}}^{83}$ relaxation is dominated by quadrupolar processes in both the solid and liquid. The liquid ${T}_{1}$ may exhibit a contribution arising from vibrational modes. The ${\mathrm{Kr}}^{83}$ resonance shifts are found to be nearly a linear function of the sample density, with a small nonlinearity in the liquid. The shift data are compared with theory and with experimental results in xenon.
