Analysis of the modal characteristics of a Bragg fiber with a small number of claddings using a very simple analytical approach

Abstract In this paper, we reexamine the well‐known Bragg fibers from a very simple, analytical point of view. It is found that with a very small number of cladding regions one can obtain modal characteristics of Bragg fibers which are similar to those of the step‐index standard fiber under the weak‐guidance condition. The Bragg fibers are therefore close competitors of the standard weakly‐guiding step‐index fiber with respect to the few mode‐guidance properties, apart from low absorption. We show this for some special cases by obtaining the dispersion curves. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
