Erratum: The approach to nuclear statistical equilibrium

In this paper the results of calculations of the approach to equilibrium were presented for two sets of conditions: T = 3 x 10, OK, p = lo6 g/cc and T = 5 x 10, OK, p = 1.3 x lo7 g/cc. For both cases, the evolution of a region composed initially of pure Si was found to result in the production of nuclei in the vicinity of iron, with 54Fe emerging as the most abundant nucleus in this mass region. We interpreted these two results in like manner as having resulted from thermonuclear reaction buildup in the total absence of beta decay. This led us to the conclusion that the net reaction involved in the silicon-to-iron buildup was given approximately by 2 Si + 54Fe + 2p, a reaction which is endoenergetic by 1.3 MeV, and therefore that the approach to equilibrium might not comprise a stable energy-generation phase of stellar evolution. This interpretation of our results was strictly correct only for the high-temperature case (T, = 5, where T, is the temperature in units of lo9 OK). For the T9 = 3 case, the time scale
