Recent chemical, biological, and immunological evidence suggests that human growth hormone is identical or similar to human prolactin. Therefore, the metabolic effect of a purified sheep prolactin preparation was studied in man. Three hypopituitary dwarfs on metabolic balance study were given human growth hormone and, subsequently, sheep prolactin. The sheep prolactin preparation was found to mimic the metabolic action of human growth hormone, producing nitrogen retention, hypercalciuria, and relative impairment of carbohydrate tolerance.
