he National Plant Diagnostic Network (NPDN) was formed in part as a response to the events of 9/11/2001. The focus includes natural or accidental introduction of pests and pathogens, along with intentional introduction. Initial efforts of the NPDN focused on plant pathology, but now include entomology. Its goal is to provide proper equipment and training for labs at State Land Grant Universities to prepare for testing some of the USDA's select agents of concern. It has also focused on building an IT network for informational flow of data. The NPDN is concerned with all exotic pest introductions that could influence agriculture, including arthropods, nematodes, weeds, and mollusks (in addition to plant pathogens). Currently the NPDN has the goal of quickly disseminating and providing access for information on new and emerging pests, maintaining a community oflike-minded entomologists that deal with exotic pests, enhancing and complementing information from APHIS/PPQ, CAPS, and State Departments of Agriculture, and identifying areas and topics for specialized training.
