Abstract The recent surge of deepwater drilling activity throughout the world, and in particular the US Gulf of Mexico has prompted oil companies, drilling contractors and equipment manufacturers alike, to develop and implement a wide variety of technologically advanced systems designed to overcome the adversities associated with the harsh environment of today's extreme water depths. In particular well control equipment and related systems have undergone the greatest transformations and made the most significant technological gains.
