Significant Features of Graded Bedding

The evidence for attributing graded graywackes and deep-sea sands to the action of turbidity currents is summarized. The various types of grading and the associated soft-rock deformations are described and explained. Lamination, current bedding, and ripple bedding in graded beds are attributed to tractional transport along the bottom. The features of graded series can be used to gain important information on paleogeographic problems. Examples of these methods, as applied to the history of the Ventura basin, are given.
