Ancient Roman gardens in Campania and Tunisia: A comparison of the evidence

Abstract The tragic way in which Pompeii and the surrounding Campanian sites were preserved by the sudden eruption of Vesuvius in ad 79 makes them a unique and precious source of information about ancient gardens, such as can be known from no other ancient site. Living cities and villas are preserved just as they were at the moment of their destruction. The study of Italian gardens begins with these gardens.
