Heavy-fermion behavior in YbPtIn

The ytterbium compound YbPtIn has been studied by means of single-crystal x-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, heat capacity, electrical resistivity, and magnetoresistivity measurements, performed down to 100 mK in fields up to 14 T. The magnetic properties of YbPtIn are governed by the presence of the magnetic moments of ${\mathrm{Yb}}^{3+}$ ions, which order magnetically at low temperatures. Strongly enhanced electronic specific heat, highly reduced magnetic entropy, and characteristic Kondo-like behavior of the resistivity and the magnetoresistivity allow classifying YbPtIn as a heavy-fermion system.
