The Existence of Intermediate Waves in Neutral Sheets

Green and Sweet have questioned the resolution of neutral sheets into standing waves on the basis that they appear to require inadmissible slow shocks. It was suggested earlier by Kantrowitz and Petschek that such situations in general magnetohydrodynamic flows can be resolved by a combination of slow and intermediate waves. Several specific cases for neutral sheet configurations are demonstrated to give consistent solutions when the additional waves are taken into account.
