Thin‐layer Chromatography and its Application to Dyes

Sheldrick in the chair The technique of thin‐layer chromatography is described in its practical aspects, with details of the apparatus required, selection of adsorbent and preparation of thin layers, methods of development, and choice of solvent. Brief details are given of the application of thin‐layer chromatography to the characterisation of the main classes of dyes: qualitative and quantitative aspects are considered. The use of the technique for the study and control of reactions is also discussed. The advantages of thin‐layer chromatography over other chromatographic techniques are summarised.
