I should like to thank the American Society of Civil Engineers for the great honor of inviting me to give the Terzaghi Lecture. Exactly 50 years have passed since Karl Terzaghi in 1925 published his classic book on Erdbaumechanik (Soil Mechanics), which created an entirely new branch of civil engineering.
