Family Literacy: Resisting Deficit Models

0 In the flyer for the 1993 National Conference on Family Literacy, arranged by the National Center for Family Literacy, prospective participants are told that promulgated by intergenerational undereducation are reaching and devastating, leaving families in a constant crisis within the cycle of poverty. Few of us would argue with the idea that members of the community who are poor and have not had the opportunity to become educated face serious problems in their everyday lives (see Kozol, 1991). The difficulties faced by families who live in poverty are far reaching and devastating. However, the understanding that society constructs the conditions of poverty in which many are forced to live seems to have been missed by those who are championing the growing national family literacy movement in the U.S.
