Automated multi-modality image registration based on information theory

Abstract.We propose an information theoretic approach to the rigid body registration of 3D multi-modality medical image data. The "mutual infor-mation " of grey-value pairs is proposed as a new matching criterion. The new voxel similarity based (VB) registration algorithm is applied to real world images of the human head (CT, MR, and PET volumes), and com-pared to stereotactic and 2 other voxel based registration solutions. Our results show that subvoxel accuracy can be obtained completely automati-cally and without any pre-segmentation. 1.
