Abstract

Interstitial cells in myxomatous valves have features of activated myofibroblasts and express excessive levels of catabolic enzymes, without altered levels of interstitial collagen mRNA. We conclude that valvular interstitial cells regulate matrix degradation and remodeling in myxomatous mitral valve degeneration.
