Role of Hydrotalcites Cations in Thermal Stabilization of Poly (Vinyl Chloride)

Abstract The present paper describes the effect of cation, present in a basic cationic building layer and anion in interlayers on the thermal stabilizing properties of hydrotalcites. Hydrotalcites having Cl− and in their anionic layer, having basic cationic layers Mg and Ca, were synthesized by hydrothermal treatment. These materials were characterized using techniques such as EDX, XRD, SEM, TGA, FTIR, etc. Stabilization behavior of synthesized material towards PVC was studied using thermal and color stability measurements. A comparative study was performed keeping the anion layer the same while substituting the "Mg" of the cationic layer by Ca. The cations present in the hydrotalcite structure have a pronounced role while hydrotalcite works as an anion-exchanger and is used as a halogen-scavenger in poly (vinyl chloride). The paper concludes with a brief discussion of the mechanism involved in the halogen-scavenging process when hydrotalcites were used as a stabilizer in PVC.
