Biobased Poly Vinylchloride (PVC)

Published 2016 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.In this chapter, we have analyzed the environmental sustainability of the biobased polyvinyl chlorine (PVC), through life cycle assessment (LCA). We have focused on the bioethanol-based PVC, produced from sugarcane, and compared to the fossil-based PVC. Further, we have also analyzed the best use of bioethanol (fuel, short-life plastic and long-life plastic), considering impacts on climate change. The LCA showed better results for bioethanol-based PVC, with some remarks (e.g., indirect land use change). Bioethanol-based PVC also appears to be the best final use for bioethanol, as long as it is used for long-life plastic applications (e.g., water pipes).
