EFFECT OF SOUND INTENSITY OF MUSIC ON PERCEIVED EXERTION DURING CYCLE EXERCISE.

1566 Music is widely used for exercise classes in the fitness industry. The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of different sound intensities of music on heart rate (HR) and perceived exertion (RPE) during standardized cycle exercise. 14 male and 4 female physically active volunteers (age 20.5 ± 1.89 y) performed a standard task on a cycle ergometer under three conditions on different days, using a counter-balanced repeated measures design: no music (NM), 70 ± 3.5 dB music (M70), and 85 ± 3.5 dB music (M85). They exercised for 20 min at 80% HRMax (workload = 1.47 ± 0.36 kp, 90 rev/min). Sound intensity of "Merengue House" Latin music (tempo = 131 ± 4.30 bpm), was calibrated with a sound level meter. HR and RPE were registered at time = 10 and 20 min using a HR monitor and the Borg RPE-15 scale. (Table)TableA 3 × 2 ANOVA with repeated measures indicated that means at t = 20 min were significantly higher than at t = 10 min for both HR and RPE (p<0.05). The differences in HR or RPE among conditions were not significant (p>0.05).
