Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell collection from elderly related donors: a retrospective multicenter study on mobilization and collection efficiency

We have therefore retrospectively analyzed data on 81 healthy donors older than 65 years from eight Italian transplant centers undergoing a total of 142 apheresis procedures. Data related to CD34+ cell mobilization in peripheral blood, collection and complication during procedures were recorded. Standard mobilization regimen was granulocyte colony-stimulating factor at 10 μg/kg/die for 4 days. On Day 5, median number of peripheral CD34+ cells was 42/ mL. Median number of total CD34+ cells collected was 3.35x106/kg in a median of 2 aphereses. Adverse events were recorded in 34.8% of procedures but were mostly mild. Our data show that mobilization of donors older than 65 can be safe and effective in the majority of cases.
