Performance analysts are required to process large volumes of data. They must analyse data quickly and communicate effectively. Data visualisation illuminates complex relationships within masses of data. Well-designed performance dashboards facilitate quick analysis and communicate at a glance what has happened to, and in, the portfolio of assets. The goal of dashboards is to alert the user to potential issues and allow action to be taken. Effective data visualisation graphical tools include: scatter graphs, line graphs, histograms, pie chart, heat map, speed dials, risk triangles, snail trail diagrams, spider chart, and floating bar charts. Performance measurement, risk analysis, return attribution and adherence to ethical standards are key parts of the asset manager selection process. The chapter presents the four dimensions of performance: ex-post return, ex-post risk, ex-ante return, and ex-ante risk. Performance analysts have a key role to play in the risk control environment of asset managers.
