Dimensions of the OVIS with Adjudicated Delinquents

This study identifies the dimensions of vocational interests in the Ohio Vocational Interest Survey (OVIS) among adjudicated male delinquents. A random sample of 301 male delinquents were administered the OVIS. A principal components factor analysis with varimax rotations identified four factors: (a) expression of ideas to people, (b) personal and commercial services, (c) systems technology and efficiency, and (d) operation of things and machines. The first factor accounted for 79.3 percent of the total variance and the others accounted for 9.1 percent, 7.2 percent, and 4.4 percent, respectively. The results suggested that the first factor, expression of ideas to people, may be associated with the personality style of delinquents; and the fourth factor, operation of things and machines, may match delinquents' manifest interests in engine operation and repair. The results lend support for the use of the cubistic model and the OVIS with delinquents.
