Declines in Unintended Pregnancy in the United States, 2008–2011

(Abstracted from N Engl J Med 2016;374:843–852) In an intended or planned pregnancy, women and couples determine freely whether and when they have children. Unintended pregnancy among women and girls often results in births that are more likely than intended pregnancies to have inadequate or a delayed initiation of prenatal care, for smoking and drinking during pregnancy, and to have premature and low-birth-weight infants.
