The experimental determination of the viscosity of slags proves to be difficult. Therefore models for calculation have been developed. The Urbain‐III‐model is very often used for slags. In order to further improve its accuracy, the Forschungsgemeinschaft Eisenhüttenschlacken (FEhS) modified this model by adjusting the coefficients of Weymann's temperature relation in dependence of the CaO/SiO 2 ‐basicity of the slag: η = A.T.exp(10 3 .B/T) with A = f (C/S‐basicity); B = f (x oxides ). Viscosities calculated by means of this modified model fit well with measured values. It has been shown that the application of this model enables the optimisation of metallurgical reactions and processes. Furthermore it should be possible to optimise those properties of the solidified slag which are influenced by the viscosity of the liquid slag. Thus the production of construction materials could be further improved to fulfil the highest quality requirements.
