Race, Place, and Nostalgia after the Counterculture: Keith Jarrett and Pat Metheny on ECM

For years jazz has been considered as an urban genre. This chapter, however, studies jazz as a rural genre, showing that nonurban approaches to jazz distinguish themselves from their urban counterparts through programmatic titles and suggestive album-cover images. It also describes recordings that represent a period in postwar jazz which is noted for being rooted in or moving toward the musical styles of white rural and middle America.
