Measurement of the W-boson mass in pp collisions at $$\sqrt{s}=7\, \hbox {TeV}$$ s = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A measurement of the mass of the <i>W</i> boson is presented based on proton-proton collision data recorded in 2011 at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC, and corresponding to <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:mrow><mml:mn>4.6</mml:mn> <mml:mspace></mml:mspace> <mml:msup><mml:mtext>fb</mml:mtext> <mml:mrow><mml:mo>-</mml:mo> <mml:mn>1</mml:mn></mml:mrow> </mml:msup> </mml:mrow> </mml:math> of integrated luminosity. The selected data sample consists of <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:mrow><mml:mn>7.8</mml:mn> <mml:mo>×</mml:mo> <mml:msup><mml:mn>10</mml:mn> <mml:mn>6</mml:mn></mml:msup> </mml:mrow> </mml:math> candidates in the <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:mrow><mml:mi>W</mml:mi> <mml:mo>→</mml:mo> <mml:mi>μ</mml:mi> <mml:mi>ν</mml:mi></mml:mrow> </mml:math> channel and <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:mrow><mml:mn>5.9</mml:mn> <mml:mo>×</mml:mo> <mml:msup><mml:mn>10</mml:mn> <mml:mn>6</mml:mn></mml:msup> </mml:mrow> </mml:math> candidates in the <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:mrow><mml:mi>W</mml:mi> <mml:mo>→</mml:mo> <mml:mi>e</mml:mi> <mml:mi>ν</mml:mi></mml:mrow> </mml:math> channel. A measurement of the mass difference between the <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:msup><mml:mi>W</mml:mi> <mml:mo>+</mml:mo></mml:msup> </mml:math> and <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:msup><mml:mi>W</mml:mi> <mml:mo>-</mml:mo></mml:msup> </mml:math> bosons yields <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:mrow><mml:msub><mml:mi>m</mml:mi> <mml:msup><mml:mi>W</mml:mi> <mml:mo>+</mml:mo></mml:msup> </mml:msub> <mml:mo>-</mml:mo> <mml:msub><mml:mi>m</mml:mi> <mml:msup><mml:mi>W</mml:mi> <mml:mo>-</mml:mo></mml:msup> </mml:msub> <mml:mo>=</mml:mo> <mml:mo>-</mml:mo> <mml:mspace></mml:mspace> <mml:mn>29</mml:mn> <mml:mo>±</mml:mo> <mml:mn>28</mml:mn></mml:mrow> </mml:math> MeV.
