Squintics and the sinusoidal fallacy

Here is a published example of what I mean by the sinusoidal fallacy: “The diagram shows the graph of f( x ) = x ( x–a )( x– 2 a ). C is a maximum point on the curve and has coordinates ( a /2, b ) and D is a minimum point on the curve and has coordinates (3 a /2,– b )”.
