Server-Based Smart Adaptive Bit Rate (SABR) Streaming With Statistical Multiplexing

With the growing popularity of mobile devices (i.e. smartphones and tablets) streaming videos over HTTP increases rapidly. More and more mobile users are tuning into streaming videos. However, it becomes challenging to support the demand of a large number of concurrent users sharing the network while maintaining good video quality for each user. In addition, the existing client controlled distribution mechanism is not very efficient. It under utilizes the available bandwidth and provides uneven visual qualities to the clients. To address this, a server controlled system is proposed where a server manages the bit rates and video quality each client gets. It not only significantly improves the network utilization but also provides optimal visual quality.
