Survey on cladded component design procedures for nuclear and non-nuclear applications

Corrosion resistant weld overlay and integral claddings are used to provide corrosion resistance to components made of structural materials that are susceptible to corrosion. Generally, cladding is used in industry to offset the cost of expensive corrosion resistance alloys. In the application to nuclear, cladding provides a mechanism to allow use of limited code approved base materials in corrosive environments. Applicable design rules will need to be developed to support the design and construction of these cladded components for MSR applications. This document provides a survey of the state-of-the-art in design practice of cladded components for both the nuclear and non-nuclear industry. Design practice and service experience in the nuclear and non-nuclear is investigated. A gap analysis on applying these design practice to nuclear applications is included.
