Abstract

Opioid overdose deaths have increased rapidly in northeastern Massachusetts since 2013, with postmortem fentanyl detection increasing statewide. Molecular data indicate multiple introductions of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) among persons who inject drugs as well as recent and rapid transmission in the context of some longstanding HIV infections.
