During our careers as a chemical engineer, a process development scientist, and an operational leadership professional, we have had several opportunities to lead and participate in cross-functional teams. These teams have tackled wide challenges, typically in project or time-bound committee formats. The organizational structure and cross-departmental collaboration needed through the lifecycle of developing and manufacturing products and services requires effective cross-functional teams to solve challenges and meet deliveries. This chapter will present some real examples as to why some projects often require a diverse team, and why the development of a proper team structure, efficient communication, and most crucially, trust, are necessary. Challenges faced and lessons learned by both an individual participant and a leader of a cross-functional team are presented. Manoj Zalpuri is the Director of Operations and Operational Excellence Lead at Piramal Pharma Solutions. He holds a BSc in Chemical Engineering from Pune University. Amy Hamlin is a Technology Transfer Manager at Piramal Pharma Solutions. She holds a BS in Chemistry from University of Detroit Mercy and a PhD in Chemistry from University of California, Berkeley. Combined they have over 25 years’ experience in the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry.
