A neonate with ‘amphibian heart’: A rare combination of complex congenital heart diseases

Persistent truncus arteriosus is a rare congenital malformation of the heart. It arises from the ventricular cavity through a common ventriculo-arterial junction and is usually associated with doubly committed ventricular septal defect. Common arterial trunk arising from single ventricle is very rare. We describe a case of single arterial trunk arising from univentricular heart. The heart of an amphibian, such as frog has three chambers; two atria, single ventricle and common arterial trunk. Our case highlights the resemblance of primitive embryologic defect to amphibian heart.
