Excitation energy calculations with TD-DFT

Der rechnerische Aufwand von quantenmechanischen Berechnungen der Materiestruktur skaliert mit der Potenz der berücksichtigten Teilchen. Die Dichtefunktionaltheorie (DFT) benützt als grundlegende Variable die elektronische Dichte statt der Wellenfunktion, was die Anzahl der Freiheitsgrade auf drei beschränkt. Somit sind Berechnungen von Systemen mit bis zu tausenden von Atomen möglich. Obwohl die DFT nur auf Grundzustände anwendbar ist, erweitert das Runge-Gross Theorem die Theorie auf zeitabhängige Phänomene (TD-DFT) und erlaubt somit die Berechnung von elektronisch angeregten Zuständen. In dieser Arbeit wird die Implementation der TD-DFT im Rahmen der Gaussian and plane waves (GPW) und der Gaussian and augmented plane waves (GAPW) Methoden vorgestellt. Diese Programmcodes erlauben die effiziente Behandlung aller Systemtypen. Ein dritter Teil der Arbeit ist der Vorstellung der two-step Methode gewidmet. Diese bringt ein verbessertes austausch-korrelations(XC)-Potential näherungsweise zur Anwendung. Dadurch wird ein beträchtlicher Nachteil der vollen Anwendung des verbesserten XC- Potentials vermieden und der rechnerische Aufwand bleibt kleiner. Wir stellen fest, dass die two-step Methode geeignet ist, Rydberg Anregungen besser vorherzusagen, jedoch bei anderen Anregungen zu leicht schlechteren Resultaten führen kann.

\nThe computational cost of quantum mechanical calculations of the structure of matter scales with the power of the number of particles involved. Density functional theory (DFT) uses the electronic density, rather than the wavefunction, as the basic variable, which reduces the number of degrees of freedom to three and thus allows for the calculation of systems of up to thousands of atoms. Though DFT is applicable only to ground-states, the Runge-Gross theorem extends the theory into the time-domain (time-dependent DFT, or TD-DFT), which allows the treatment of electronically excited states. This thesis presents the implementation of the excitation energy linear response equations in two frameworks: the Gaussians and plane waves (GPW) method and the Gaussian and augmented plane waves (GAPW) method. The codes can handle all types of systems efficiently. In a third part of the thesis a two-step procedure, which applies an improved exchange-correlation(XC)-potential in an approximate way, is proposed. It avoids a serious drawback of the full application of an improved XC- potential at a lower computational cost. We find that the two-step procedure is indeed capable of giving improved excitation energies for the Rydberg excitations, but it also gives slightly worse results for other types of excitations.
