The Caledonide orogen : Scandinavia and related areas

This book covers the geology of the Caledonide orogen in Scandinavia, set in the framework of the North Atlantic Caledonides. A large part of the volume describes the orogen regionally and summarizes the Late Proterozoic and Early Palaeozoic history and treating a wide range of ongoing research. In addition overviews and in-depth discussions are provided on particular aspects of the Caledonide Orogen in other areas, such as Svalbard, North and East Greenland, the UK, the northern Appalachians, France, USSR and Sardinia. The Caledonian mountains of Scandinavia provide well-exposed profiles through the deeper parts of an orogen, affording conditions particularly favourable for the study of mountain building processes. In this first comprehensive treatment of the Scandinavian Caledonides since the development of plate tectonic theory, a great variety of contributions describing structure, stratigraphy, sedimentology and igneous and metamorphic petrology are accompanied by syntheses of the orogenic evolution.
