Manufacturing of and the performance of an integrally-formed, polypropylene coated geosynthetic clay barrier

This paper presents the adaptation of typical textile coating procedures to that of a Needle Punched Geosynthetic Clay Liner. Originating from the textile industry, this process yields a composite GBR-C/GCL product with unique hydraulic properties and physical performances that make it well suited to many new design approaches. This paper will explain the basics of the manufacturing techniques, that while common to the textile trade, is novel to the Geosynthetics Industry. It also discusses the nuances of the manufacturing quality control of the manufacturing procedures that must be employed to quantify the important properties of the composite material. Several research programs that have been employed to define the unique properties exhibited by the GBR-C/GCL.
