The effects of combined exercise program on several clinical parameters according to a MspI RFLP in ApoAII gene in obese middle-aged women

BACKGROUND: We studied the effects of combined exercise program for 16 weeks on various clinical parameters including body composition, hemodynamic parameters, physical fitness factors and blood biochemical parameters according to a MspI RFLP in apolipoprotein AII(ApoAII) gene.METHODS. A total of 23 obese middle-aged women above 30% of body fat (mean age 53.3±7.4 year) were participated in our study program, and they all completed this combined exercise program including aerobic and resistance exercise program for 16 weeks. A MspI restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) in ApoAII gene was genotyped by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification, digestion by MspI restriction enzyme and further 2% agarose gel electrophoresis.RESULTS: Although this genetic polymorphism was not significantly associated with the changes of these clinical parameters in this study program as well as any baseline clinical parameters, there was the significant association between this genetic polymorphism and the baseline serum AST activity (P<0.05).CONCLUSIONS: Our study suggest that a MspI RFLP in ApoAII gene might be one of the useful genetic markers related to liver function. However, because sample size in this study was yet modest, further studies using larger sample size will be required to confirm the functional role of this genetic polymorphism.
