The Compute-to-Learn Pedagogy and Its Implementation in the Chemistry Curriculum

The Compute-to-Learn (C2L) pedagogy is a semester-long, active-learning experience in which students learn basic programming skills that are applied by coding demonstrations of chemistry concepts. Students work collaboratively to design and program their demonstrations within a studio learning environment. The completed demonstrations are made publicly available, either by undergoing external peer-review before publication on the Wolfram Demonstrations Project website or via GitHub. This chapter describes the C2L pedagogy and provides examples of implementation at a large research university, a small liberal arts college, a mid-size primarily undergraduate university, and a small, two-year community college. The chapter will also discuss challenges, strategies, and solutions for implementing the C2L pedagogy within these various courses and contexts.
