From 1902 to 1944, Smith Ely Jelliffe was managing editor of the Journal. During that period, he was the first publisher of psychoanalytic literature in the United States, helped to integrate the separate fields of neurology and psychiatry, and laid guidelines for the emerging specialty of psychosomatic medicine. This article begins with a condensed biographical sketch as an introduction to Jelliffe's alliance with the Journal; charts Jelliffe's influence in merging neurology with new concepts of psychoanalysis; illustrates the role played by the Journal in this accelerated process of growth and re-orientation; examines Jelliffe's model of human understanding as it was reflected in his policies for the Journal; and finally offers brief illustrations of Jelliffe's personal qualities, especially his practical mysticism, as they found expression in his views of science, medicine, and art.
