The PYCASSO territories Project: a Large Onshore CCUS Hub for Southern Europe.

Summary Beginning of 2021, thirty institutions, universities and industrial companies teamed up to form PYCASSO, a territories project and operational consortium focused on advancing CCUS development studies onshore SW France and NE Spain to reach the net zero emissions European objective in 2050. The initiative aims at accelerating the adoption of CCUS to help decarbonizing large segments of the present industrial sites and to appeal other new greener industries). The PYCASSO project will benefit from the presence of heavy industrial sectors with hard to abate CO2 emissions, extensive gas pipes networks and depleted former gas fields. The joint effort goes into educating decision-makers and local stakeholders on the important future roles of direct use of the subsurface in building a green regional economy. The very goal of PYCASSO is to bring CCUS solutions to scale and to implement a complete 1 Mt (million tons)/year CO2 abatement chain in 2030 to be further extended to 5 Mt/y in 2035 in order to compensate for the astonishing absence of CCUS projects in Southern Europe, out of more than 60 projects identified in Europe ( International Association of Oil and Gas Producers, 2022 ).
