High Voltage Battery Management System Hardware and Software Design for Photovoltaic Energy Systems

The energy generated from renewable energy systems is usually stored in high-energy lithium-ion battery storage systems. Therefore, it is optimal to use high voltage batteries to decrease the current level in order to have minimum power loss. Thus, this paper discusses the high voltage battery management system (BMS) hardware and software design for a photovoltaic (PV) energy system with 200 V<inf>DC</inf>lithium-ion battery pack. This paper proposes a 3-level flying capacitor DC-DC converter in the hardware design with simulation results. Also, it proposes a state-of-charge (SoC) estimation method, a battery modelling for LG INR18650 MH1 lithium-ion battery cells and temperature effect in the thermal management strategy as a software design by using simulation and experimental test results.
