Roman Routes in Italian Postcolonial Women Writers

AbstractRome is the city where the memory of Italian colonialism is more evident in the urban space. Nevertheless, this heritage is often neglected or forgotten, just like other traces of Italian colonialism in the national territory and culture. This period of Italian history has indeed never been properly elaborated by Italian culture and historiography, as critics have widely demonstrated. In this essay, traces of Italian colonialism in Rome will be investigated through the analysis of literary contributions produced over the last thirty years, and specifically of texts written by women writers, who proved to have a special perspective on colonialism and its effects on the capital. Novels, short stories, poems and autobiographies by Ubah Cristina Ali Farah, Shirin Ramzanali Fazel, Igiaba Scego and Ribka Sibhatu – and specifically the paths covered by their fictional characters in the urban space – will thus serve as guides to explore the city. The aim of the essay is to shed light on the present identity of Rome as a complex city and as the object of new narrations. From Stazione Termini to Quartiere Africano, passing through Piazza di Porta Capena, Piazzale Flaminio and other places, this essay remaps the urban space and questions Rome’s colonial heritage. For better readability, I use English translations in the text. I list the original Italian text passages at the end.3 Oltre Babilonia is the story of five characters – two daughters, two mothers and one father – narrated from their interlaced perspectives. The plot is set in different places and times: it addresses issues of gender, sexuality and embodiment. One of the characters, Zuhra, can be considered the guide within the novel, since she is the narrator of the prologue and of the epilogue.4 The same expedient of colours is used by Scego in her novel La linea del colore (Citation2020a, 40–41).5 Born in Verona in 1973 from a Somali father and an Italian mother, Ubah Cristina Ali Farah has lived in Mogadishu, in Hungary and in Italy. Currently she lives in Brussels. She received a PhD in African Studies from the University of Naples L’Orientale. She has published novels, poems, essays and journal contributions.6 Born in Mogadishu in 1953 from a Pakistani father and a Somali mother, Shirin Ramzanali Fazel has lived in different countries all over the world. Today she predominantly lives in Birmingham, UK. She has published novels, short stories, poems and essays.7 The English translation of La linea del colore (The Color Line) was published in 2022 by Other Press, translated by John Cullen and Gregory Conti.8 Igiaba Scego was born in Rome in 1974 from Somali parents. She received a PhD in Pedagogy from the University of Roma Tre. Scego has published novels, essays and short stories. She is a contributor to different journals and newspapers, and very active in the press and on social media.9 The fact that until 1960 Somalia was a trust territory under Italian administration, the controversial role Italy played in the 1990s during the Somali civil war, and the events around the murder of Ilaria Alpi are only some of the examples showing this particular relationship.10 La mia casa è dove sono was first published by Rizzoli in 2010. I am here using the revised edition, published by Loescher in 2012.11 The novel tells the story of Lafanu Brown, a black American woman who, in the nineteenth century, travels to and around Italy and becomes an artist. While she opens her studio in Rome, the plot moves to other cities as well, such as Florence and Venice. To create the protagonist, the author was inspired by the story of two real women: the sculptor Edmonia Lewis and the midwife Sarah Parker Remond.12 Ulisse Barbieri (1842–1899) was a writer and playwright, who openly criticised the expansionist aspirations of Italy after the unification. It is interesting to underline that before Scego, the Italian postcolonial writer Ribka Sibhatu alluded to Barbieri’s verse quoted in this paragraph, in the documentary Auló: Roma Postcoloniale (Citation2012). Sibhatu declared that the square should no longer honour the memory of the invaders, but of the people who were against that invasion, such as Andrea Costa and Ulisse Barbieri.13 Barbieri’s words in Dopo il disastro were reused in 2010 by rapper Boika Esteban in his song titled Piazza dei Cinquecento. Ribka Sibhatu and Simone Brioni’s documentary Aulò. Roma Postcoloniale (2012) shows an extract from the song.14 Andrea Costa (1851–1910) was a politician, one of the founders of the Italian Socialist Party.15 Memoirs of the author, in which she recalls her childhood in Somalia, her arrival in Italy and all the episodes of her life connected with the experience of the Somali diaspora. The book has a long publishing history: here I will only recall that Lontano da Mogadiscio was first published in 1994 by Datanews. In this essay, I use the 2013 revised and expanded edition, although it is not the most recent one, because this version was conceived as bilingual. The 2013 edition is published by Laurana, while the most recent edition was published in 2016 by CreateSpace.16 This is the story of Giulia, born to a Somali mother and an Italian father. Most of the plot is set in Mogadishu (especially in a boarding school). The last part of the book is set in Italy. Hybridity in origins and culture is the main theme of the novel. It was first published in 2010, by the editor Nerosubianco; I am here using the 2017 reprinted edition, published by CreateSpace.17 Madre piccola is the story of three characters, all narrators of the events of the plot: Barni, her cousin Domenica Axad, and the latter’s former husband Taageere. Civil war in Somalia, displacement and motherhood are some of the themes investigated in the course of this very intertwined novel.18 For an insight on the Somali community’s trading in the area of Termini see Comberiati (Citation2017, 166).19 Ali Farah (Citation2007, 15) recalls the same funeral in Madre piccola.20 On the association between Termini and immigration see Brioni (Citation2017, 449–450).21 The novel tells the story of Adua, a Somali woman named after the Italian defeat against Ethiopians in 1896. In the 1970s, she arrives in Italy to pursue her dream of becoming an actress. She is misled and is cruelly exploited and abused. Her story is connected with today’s European migrant crisis. She meets and then marries a young refugee.22 Adua calls the man “Titanic” to mock him, using on purpose a rude name for someone who didn’t drown. On his part, he calls her “Vecchia Lira” (old lira), since Adua arrived in Italy in the 1970s, when the currency was the lira: an unfriendly way to say that she is older than him, and that she belongs to a previous generation of migrants. Hence, the nicknames characters give to each other in Adua show how tensed and non-linear relations can be within the immigrant communities.23 The debate is very broad and very fervent: among the many contributions on the theme, and in addition to those mentioned in the introduction of this essay, I only refer to Scego (Citation2020b) here.24 For further details see their website (https://cinemaimpero.wordpress.com) and their Facebook page.25 I calculated that in 2016 approximately 136 students out of the 176 enrolled that year belonged to a non-Italian or mixed cultural context.
