Physical foundations of the Casimir effect

Abstract The physical basis of the second quantization procedure is the representation of the field as a system of oscillators. It is therefore desirable to consider briefly those oscillator properties that will be important to us, starting with the simplest case of non-relativistic quantum mechanics.
