Concepts and Theoretical Framework of Culturally Responsive Teaching Guided PLEs

The implementation of Personal Learning Environments (PLEs) in Higher Education (HE) is impacted by the lack of a strong educational theory supporting their advancement. This chapter aims to introduce the concepts and theoretical framework of PLEs in the context of HE. Previous studies have utilized Constructivism, Connectivism, and Cognitivism to explain the principles and applications of PLEs. However, a comprehensive theoretical framework is needed to foster the development of PLEs in HE. To address this, we have developed the Society, Policy, Education, and Technology framework, which elucidates the environmental factors involved in accelerating the promotion of PLEs, starting with a redefined value of HE. Additionally, we have created a PLE framework encompassing four major perspectives: academic administrative, learner and learning, teacher and teaching, and information communication technology. We have also incorporated the principles of Culturally Responsive Teaching in the proposed frameworks. These frameworks serve as valuable resources for all stakeholders involved in the promotion of PLEs in HE.
