Design of a Lightweight Magnetically Geared Motor for Use in Aerospace Propulsion Applications

This paper describes the design and analysis of a new class of magnetically geared machine that has been specifically optimized to deliver the maximum torque output for the lowest total mass. The motor uses a totally enclosed non-ventilated design and has a ducted frame that gives a maximum cooling effect from ducted airflows and as such the machine does not require any ancillary cooling equipment such as heat exchangers. This paper describes the design features that have been employed, initially discussing the magnetically geared motor topology then describing in detail the specific design features.
