The Success Story of ESP Advanced Technology Application to Address the Risk of Well Inflow Capability Uncertainty Using a Wide Range and Abrasive-Resistant ESP in the B and K Fields

The B and K Oil Fields, situated in the Riau Province of Indonesia, present distinct operational challenges due to their varying characteristics and common issues. The B field operates as a waterflood field, while the K field is characterized by its primary heavy oil production. Both fields, however, suffer from significant reservoir compartmentalization, leading to uneven well-inflow capabilities and persistent problems with sand and gas intrusion. To address these challenges and maximize production rates, several wells in the B and K fields are being considered for Artificial Lift Conversion (ALC) from Sucker Rod Pump (SRP) to Electric Submersible Pump (ESP). The transition to ESPs aims to enhance production rates, yet the uncertainty in well-inflow capabilities poses a risk of early pump failure and low-inflow problems. Traditionally, a Variable Speed Drive (VSD) is employed to mitigate low inflow by adjusting the production rate. However, this approach introduces additional complications related to VSD resource prioritization. Given these complexities, there is a pressing need for a new method or technology to reduce the uncertainty in well-inflow capabilities. This would enhance pump reliability, increase production rates, and optimize the allocation of VSD resources. The proposed solution involves the implementation of an abrasive-resistant ESP technology designed to operate efficiently across a broad flow range, addressing both sand and gas issues and improving overall well performance.
