Impact of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) disease on the quality of life (QoL) of older adults in Europe

<bold>Background:</bold> Evidence about the QoL of European older adults (OA) infected with RSV is limited. We present patient-reported outcomes (PROs) collected for OA with confirmed RSV-acute respiratory infection (cRSV-ARI) during 2 RSV seasons. <bold>Methods:</bold> In this ongoing prospective epidemiological study covering 3 RSV seasons, ≥60-year-olds with an ARI episode from 6 European countries were followed for 28 or 56 days if ARI did not resolve by day (D)29. Nasal and throat swab samples were tested for RSV at D1. Symptomology was assessed using InFLUenza PRO (FLU-PRO) and impact on health using EuroQol-5 dimension (EQ-5D) questionnaires. <bold>Results:</bold> Of 1439 OA, 93 had a cRSV-ARI; 56 had cRSV-lower respiratory tract disease (cRSV-LRTD). Analysis of FLU-PRO in OA with cRSV-ARI indicated moderate to severe symptomology up to D8, mostly impacting chest/respiratory and nose domains (Figure). There was a strong impact on health utility until at least D8 in all OA with cRSV-ARI, that tended to extend until at least D15 in OA with vs without cRSV-LRTD (Figure). Estimated mean utility loss at D1 (baseline D29) was 0.1785 for OA with cRSV-ARI. <bold>Conclusion:</bold> RSV infection in OA was associated with impactful symptomology and impaired health utility. RSV vaccination may reduce the disease burden by preventing RSV and also attenuating the RSV-associated symptom severity in breakthrough infections, thus maintaining QoL in OA. <bold>Funding:</bold> GSK
